Are you being held hostage by the crabs in your life?
Have you ever heard the story of the crabs? In summary, if you put a bunch of crabs in a bucket, you don’t need a lid to keep them contained. If any single crab attempts to escape the crab-pot, the other crabs will pull him back down. And we’re not really talking about crabs now, are we?
Translate that story to human beings, and you see the analogy. Friends, family, teachers, bosses, employees, and even complete strangers have probably “crabbed” you at one time or another. Perhaps they responded negatively or critically to an idea you had. Maybe they told you that your goals are unrealistic or you are not capable of achieving them. Just like the crabs, these people may have diminished your chances of success on your goals or ideas. A single comment may have become the wedge that came between you and your dreams.
There are crabs in your pot, pulling you back down. While we don’t know why crabs pull each other down, there are a number of reasons that people do. They could simply be projecting their limiting beliefs on you and not be able to see what’s possible. They could fear you leaving them if you move forward and they do not. They could be attempting to control you. In the end, none of those things matter. What matters is what you do in response.
That crab-pot comment can stop you in your tracks, or it can become a source of motivation.
Instead of giving up or being upset by a “crab attack”, channel that negative energy into proving them wrong. Proving others wrong has driven many people to great successes in their life. More important than proving them wrong is proving you right. Show them that you can, or even better, reach down into that pot and bring them with you. Escape from the crab pot – there’s a whole new world on the other side, just waiting for you to Live Your Fullest Everyday®.
